Ibram X. Kendi wowed the world in 2019 with his #1 New York Times Bestseller, How to Be an Antiracist. (Discussed by the Northwood PTA DEI Book Club in 2020) Now in 2022, Kendi has published How to Raise An Antiracist.

Please join us in reading How to Raise An Antiracist by Ibram X Kendi as a community!

Northwood PTA will host a 4-part book club to dialogue about the content and learnings from Kendi’s book. Our book club will meet to discuss sections of How to Raise an Antiracist over the duration of the 2022-2023 school year:

  • Session 1 | Chapters 1-4 | Mon, Nov 7th @ 6:30 pm
  • Session 2 | Chapters 5-7 | Sat, Feb 4th @ 4 pm
  • Session 3 | Chapters 8-10 | Wed, Mar 15th @ 7 pm
  • Session 4 | Chapters 11 - end | May 31st @ 7 pm

Each session will be a time to discuss what we read and share our thoughts, perspectives and take-aways in a safe and respectful environment with other parents.

Beverly Daniel Tatum, PH.D. praises book stating, "Both memoir and call to action, Ibram X. Kendi's insightful book rightly encourages the critical thinking that all adults need to engage the children they love in the most essential conversations about racism. Don't fool yourself--silence is not a helpful strategy! If you want to raise empowered, antiracist children, read this book, take a deep breath, and start talking."

This is a unique opportunity and we hope you can join us.

Childcare Available

Childcare will be available for any participants. Children will watch a movie and be provided light snacks in an adjacent room.

Learnings from Session 2:
Incorporating Diverse Cultures into Toddler and Preschool Imaginative Play

Thanks to those who joined for a rich discussion during Session 2 of our Parent Book Club, focused on the preschool - Kindergarten years. One idea that came up in the conversation was how to incorporate diverse cultures in the imaginative play at this young age.

Author Kendi encourages parents and caregivers to, "seek out toys and games that reflect our child's complexion and culture, but also reflect the complexions and cultures of others. One of the most important forms of childproofing the environment [against racist ideas] is ensuring the child's toy box reflects the multiracial, multiethnic, multicultural world."
