Students in the 4th and 5th grade are eligible to participate in a number of music programs. Mercer Island is well-known for its outstanding music program.

 

Band

Band begins in 5th grade and is held before school from 8:15 to 9:00 am at Islander Middle School or Mercer Island High School. Students can learn to play:

  • Flute
  • Clarinet
  • Trumpet
  • Trombone
  • Baritone
  • Percussion (there is a limited space for percussion)

Orchestra

Orchestra begins in 5th grade and is held before school from 8:15 to 9:00 am at Islander Middle School. Students can learn to play:
  • Violin
  • Viola
  • Cello
  • String Bass

Choir

 
All interested 4th and 5th grade students are welcome to join the Northwood Owls’ Choir! The goals of this choir are to develop musicality, choral technique, appreciation and knowledge of a wide variety of music, community, and (last but not least) to have fun! The choir rehearses on Wednesday mornings at 8:10-9:05 am (day and time are tentative) in the music room.   Teacher Leader: Austin Ward, Music Teacher

 


Drum & Mallet Band

All interested 4th and 5th grade students are welcome! Some of the goals of this ensemble are musicianship, ensemble skills like listening, coordination and responsibility, leadership, teamwork, community building, and fun! We will be using a variety of percussion instruments, including xylophones, many different African drums, and even our bodies!   We will rehearse on Thursday afternoons from 3:45-4:45pm (day and time are tentative).  Spots are limited.  Teacher Leader: Austin Ward, Music Teacher
