Room Parents

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Room Parent at Northwood!  This is an important role, and your efforts are truly appreciated by the staff, families and children in our school community! We are grateful to our room parents for making a positive difference in the academic and social lives of students and help create a long-lasting bond between teachers, parents and children.

Room Parent Responsibilities

General Responsibilities

The main responsibilities of room parents fall into three key categories:

  • Communications - Communicate directly with class parents on behalf of your teacher and the PTA as it concerns classroom activities, events and general announcements.

  • Class Activities - Assist with the planning of class- and grade-level parties, including the Fall Festival (Halloween) and the End of the Year celebration; support class events as needed such as field trips and school-wide celebrations such as Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week.

  • Teacher Gifts - Organize holiday and year gifts for your teacher on behalf of your class.

If you would like more information, please find an expanded version of this document in our Room Parent Guide.

Communication

There are three main expectations of room parents:

  1. Assist the teacher with communication around classroom events and news

  2. Serve as the lead contact with the teacher on behalf of fellow parents

  3. Inform parents of PTA programs and events at school including volunteer opportunities

A class roster will be provided to you in late September.

Class Activities

As room parent, you will play a role in executing the following parties for your classroom.

  • Fall Festival is a school-wide celebration staged by the PTA. Classes visit the Festival at designated times to participate in activities. Your responsibility is for the snack portion of the celebration, which takes place in the classroom either directly before or after activities.

  • Valentine’s Day parties are low-key celebrations done in the classroom. Room parents are asked to plan 1-2 snacks, 2-3 activities and assist students with their valentines exchange.

  • Year End parties are often done grade-wide, but ultimately it is up to your teacher. Room parents are asked to plan 1-2 snacks and 2-3 activities. If the party is grade wide, collaborate with your grade’s room parents on a party plan.

*PTA also has a supply of games, toys and plates/cups/napkins available for classroom celebrations as well.

Special Activities

Your teacher may ask you to help recruit volunteers for events such as field trips. The PTA coordinates Teacher/Staff Appreciation week in May and will provide room parents with specific direction.

Teacher Gifts

You will be asked to organize a teacher gift on behalf of your class twice: during the holidays and at the end of the year.
