Northwood Spotlight: Elizabeth Melton-Grace

Kindergarten Teacher

Where are you originally from and what brought you to Mercer Island schools?

I am originally from the suburbs and city of Detroit, MI, but I moved here from Arlington, VA. Northwood was such an appealing school due to the welcoming community, incredible leadership, and caring staff.

What grade/area do you teach/support and how long have you been in education?

I am a kindergarten teacher and have been a general classroom teacher for 4 years (all at Northwood!). I have worked in education for over a decade in some form or another.

What is your favorite sport or hobby to do when you are not at school?

My friends always tease me for having too many hobbies. My favorites include playing the violin, golfing, and skating.

What are some small things that make your day better?

Making the students laugh is always a great feeling! I also secretly love doing the daily New York Times puzzles.

What is your favorite band or artist to listen to?

Since music is one of my passions (and I am from the birthplace of Motown and Techno), I definitely cannot pick just one artist. My tastes range from Hilary Hahn to Stevie Wonder to Les Gordon, depending on the day.

Is there a skill you would like to master?

Haha – the violin! I have been playing since I was 12 and it still takes so much practice and patience. Even as an adult, I am always learning more about the skill and growing as a player.
