Northwood Spotlight: Julie Newcomer
4th Grade Teacher / Administrative Intern
Where are you originally from and what brought you to Mercer Island schools?
I was born and raised on Mercer Island. I loved growing up here and I wanted my kiddos to have the same experience. My husband, Brad, and I moved back here about 14 years ago. He is a convert. He was raised in Redmond but absolutely loves it here.
What grade/area do you teach/support and how long have you been in education?
I am wearing a lot of hats this year. I am currently teaching fourth grade, but I have also returned to school to get my principal credential. So I am an administrative intern at Northwood as well. I have been so lucky to have a regular substitute in my classroom. Elizabeth Loiselle is a rockstar!
What is the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
I was a contestant on the Wheel of Fortune. It was crazy fun and I went home with $4000 and some parting gifts. Fun fact: They film five shows in a day so Pat and Vanna only work a week each month.
What are some small things that make your day better?
Student laughter is my favorite. If I can make them laugh while they are learning then I am delighted.
I also love a walk with my family and my two bulldogs.
Tell us about your immediate family and pets.
My husband and I have been married for 19 years. He is the calm to my energy. We have three children. Caley is 17 and a junior at the high school. Henry is 15 and a freshman. Brody is a 13-year-old seventh grader. I also have two fabulously charming bulldogs: Auggie and Moose.
Is there a skill you would like to master?
I have not learned how to hula hoop yet. I have been trying since I was 5 years old and someday I will get it!
