Northwood Spotlight: Stacy Smedberg

PE Teacher

Where are you originally from and what brought you to Mercer Island schools?

I grew up in Bremerton, across the Puget Sound, west of Seattle. I started my career over on the Peninsula, but three years later, at the end of the 90’s I moved to Seattle. In 2009 I began working for MISD. I’ve taught K-5 Physical Education at Northwood since it opened and before that I helped with overload at Lakeridge, Island Park and West Mercer.

It is a blessing to have such a great community to work in and a great family to go home to. I genuinely love working with kids and feel Mercer Island School District is such a great place be. What a great life!

What is your favorite sport or hobby to do when you are not at school?

I really enjoy being outdoors! When at home, I like working in the garden and taking my dog for walks. As far as local adventures, I enjoy skiing and snowboarding, hiking, camping and all water spots. I also love traveling the world. An ideal vacation for me would be in the tropics where I could enjoy delicious fruits, go on hikes and play at the beach. That said, I also love mountain skiing adventures.

Is there a skill you would like to master?

Learning is a constant in my life. However, learning additional languages has always challenged me; I wish I had several languages mastered. Currently, my middle schooler is learning a second language and I find myself brushing up on my studies from long ago.  My youngest has been eagerly exploring the way cats communicate ever since we adopted a kitten last year.
