Northwood Spotlight: Laura Fleury

Registrar / Administrative Assistant

Where are you originally from and what brought you to Mercer island schools?

I am originally from Atlanta, Georgia. I moved to Seattle a few years ago because I took this job at Northwood! Although I miss the Southern heat, I have grown to love long summer days, being close to the water and seeing the mountains everyday.

What grade/area do you teach/support and how long have you been in education?

I'm the Northwood Registrar and Administrative Assistant and I work in the Front Office. I help grown ups in the building like our principal and associate principal, as well as parents and teachers. And, I get to help kids sometimes, too! This is my 15th year working in education. Before I worked at Northwood, I worked in the school library at a Department of Defense school in the Middle East, and before that, I was the Director of Admissions and Financial Aid at a private school, and before that, I was an art teacher for 10 years. I ahve both my Bachelors and Masters in Education, and for a time I was working on my School Library Specialists degree. I love working in schools and with kids!

What is your favorite sport or hobby to do when you are not at school?

My favorite hobbies include working in my garden, working on my house, hula-hooping, walking my neighborhood, learning about native Washington plants and animals, and making art. My favorite type of art is pottery: I even have my own pottery wheel and kiln, so I can work with clay at my house. I also have an Airstream trailer named Blackberry that I love to take camping all over Washington.

Where is your favorite place to vacation?

The San Juan Islands! Friday harbor is the sweetest historic town with great local restaurants, abundant wildlife and beautiful natural landscape It was easy falling in love with the San Juan Islands. Every 4th of July for the past 5 years I have gone to Friday Harbor for the 4th of July parade, BBQ, and fireworks - it's become a tradition!
