Northwood Spotlight: Kerry Sundholm

Kindergarten Teacher

Where are you originally from and what brought you to Mercer Island schools?

I grew up in Bremerton, an hour ferry ride from Seattle, and came to Mercer Island when my own children started school.

What grade/area do you teach/support and how long have you been in education?

I teach kindergarten and I truly love it! I have been in education for 27 years, taking off some time in the middle to be home with my own kids.

What are some small things that make your day better?

Seeing a student have an “aha’ moment. For example, after working so hard to learn all the pieces needed to know how to read, it clicks, and they can read the words on the page. The look on their face when they realize their accomplishment is priceless. It really does make my day!

What is your favorite band or artist to listen to

I’m not sure I can list just one band or artist. I love music. Right now, I’m listening to a lot of Jackson Browne, but one of my all-time favorites is Crowded House. I’m looking forward to seeing both in concert later this year. My son, who is very passionate about The Beatles and has a radio show dedicated to The Beatles on KMIH 88.9 The Bridge, has made me a fan of The Fab Four as well.

Is there a skill you would like to master?

I would like to learn how be a woodworker. I’m fascinated by how someone can take a piece of wood and create a beautiful piece of furniture. I’d also like to be able to learn how to write children’s books. Seeing the joy on my students’ faces when reading a great book to them; I’d love to be able to write like that!

If money were no object, what is something you would buy or somewhere you would go?

I’d love to spend a few months living in Italy with my family, eating the food, seeing the sights, and experiencing the culture, customs, and traditions from the various regions.
